There are many scriptures about giving to the needy.  God cares for the poor and has called on His people to provide for them.  In the Old Testament Law, Leviticus 19:9-10 setup a system where people were called to leave the produce at the corners and edges of their fields unharvested so that the poor and immigrants could come along and glean some food.  Jesus warns us in Matthew 25:31-46 that there is judgment for those that do not help the poor and needy and James tells us in James 2:14-16 that a faith that doesn’t help those less fortunate is useless.  Acts 2:44-45 and Acts 4:32-37 gives us a beautiful vision of the earliest church, where they took care of each other so much that none of them was needy.  Emperor Julian of Rome was so astonished by this Christian support for the poor and needy that he said, “The impious Galileans support not only their own poor, but ours as well.”
